MN weather: A very warm end to January in the Twin Cities and one of the least snowy
MINNEAPOLIS (FOX 9) - Minnesota has been on a wild ride this month with plenty of subzero temperatures before record-breaking warmth rounded out the month — with again, very little snow.
Twin Cities saw little snow in January
By the numbers:
After all the craziness that the thermometer has provided this month, when calculated all together for the month as a whole, January will likely come in right around average. But for snow, not so much.

Just 1.7 inches of snow fell at the official climate site in the Twin Cities, which is one of the least snowy Januaries on record. Amazingly, it beat out the super meager and very warm January of last year.

For the season, we still haven't tallied more than 10 inches when we "should be" closing in on 30 inches. While temperatures have generally been on the rise for at least the last couple of decades, average snowfall has actually increased a few inches.

The Twin Cities metro now averages 52.5 inches of snow during the season for our 30-year climate average, up roughly 3 inches from 10 years ago. It's made even more ridiculous by many parts of the southern U.S. experiencing above average snow — and in some cases, even more than us. Parts of the Louisiana and Arkansas have seen more than the Twin Cities. Areas from Kansas City to St Louis and Cincinnati have also tallied more than the metro, but that is not nearly as rare for that to occur to this point in the winter.

Some snow is likely over the weekend, although not likely to tally much in the Twin Cities. But areas near Lake Superior could once again get several inches of slush.
MN weather: Quiet and cooler sunshine on Friday
Friday will have lots of sunshine and will be slightly cooler than Thursday. There are some slight snow chances this weekend, with most of the precipitation concentrated in northern Minnesota. FOX 9 Meteorologist Cody Matz has the full forecast.
