Bystander dies after domestic assault suspect crashes during police pursuit
MAPLEWOOD, Minn. (FOX 9) - One person is dead, and a suspect is in custody after a multi-agency pursuit following a reported domestic assault.
Law enforcement response
What we know: Roseville police say they responded to a home in the 800 block of Grandview Avenue after getting reports of a felony domestic assault the evening of Friday, Dec. 13.
Police were reportedly told the victim fled the address and was safe in another place, but that the suspect was still at the Grandview address.
An officer in an unmarked vehicle then saw the suspect exit the home around 10:30pm and get inside a vehicle, according to police.
Marked Roseville police squad vehicles then tried to stop the suspect vehicle near the intersection of County Road C and Rice Street. Police say the suspect then fled from them, and a precision immobilization technique (PIT) maneuver, which was unsuccessful.
After the suspect continued east down County Road C, Roseville police say they lost sight of the suspect's vehicle and discontinued the pursuit along Little Canada Road near I-35E.
Other agencies were then contacted to assist.
The Ramsey County Sheriff's office said one of its deputies then spotted the suspect's vehicle speeding down Edgerton Street and "tried to catch up to it for a mile."
The sheriff's office said "law enforcement had difficulty maintaining visual contact with the vehicle" because of how fast the suspect was going.
Fatal crash
What we know: The Ramsey County Sheriff's office said that while the deputy was continuing to follow in anticipation of the Minnesota State Patrol helicopter arriving overhead, the suspect crashed into an unrelated car while making a left turn at the intersection of Bellwood Avenue and Edgerton Street in Maplewood.
The car's only occupant was seriously injured in the crash and was taken to the hospital, where he later died after suffering a cardiac arrest, according to the sheriff's office.
The sheriff's office said the suspect has an extensive criminal history with nearly 40 arrests or charges.
The deceased victim's identity has not been released.
FOX 9 typically does not name suspects until they have been charged in court.
