Coast Guard rescues swimmer caught in current near Duluth lift bridge

The U.S. Coast Guard rescued a 26-year-old Duluth man who got caught up in the current while swimming near the lift bridge, according to the St. Louis County Sheriff's Office.

Officials say around 7 a.m. Saturday, authorities responded to a report of a swimmer yelling for help in St. Louis River near Pier B resort. The Coast Guard found the man about a quarter mile off the shore.

The man told deputies he was on the west side of the lift bridge trying to swim across the canal when the current got too strong. It pushed him out further into the bay and he began to call for help. He was not injured.
