Police are searching for any witnesses to a multi-vehicle accident on Highway 10 in Coon Rapids that clogged traffic during rush hour.

Police received a call at 3:40 p.m. of a crash at Highway 10 and the Northdale Boulevard overpass, east of Round Lake Boulevard. Four cares were involved in the accident scene and one car was torn in half, according to the Coon Rapids Police Department.

The cause of the crash remains under investigation, but investigators believe the 21-year-old driver of the car that was torn in half was driving eastbound on Highway 10 when something caused her to head into oncoming traffic in the westbound lanes. Her car crashed into two westbound cars traveling at highway speeds. A fourth car traveling eastbound was also impacted by the collision.

The 21-year-old driver was taken to the Hennepin County Medical Center with serious injuries. Her condition is still unknown. Two of the other drivers involved in the crash were also taken to the hospital with injuries but have since been released.  The highway reopened at about 8:30 p.m.

The Coon Rapids Police Department, Anoka County Criminal Investigative Division, Anoka County Crime Scene Unit and the Minnesota State Patrol are investigating the crash.

The Coon Rapids Police Department says it will not release accident reports or the identities of the victims for some time due to the complexities of the case.
