Driver trying to evade MN troopers crashes into parked car, kills person inside
ST. PAUL, Minn. (FOX 9) - The Minnesota State Patrol is investigating a fatal overnight crash on the east side of St. Paul that left an innocent person dead after a police chase.
What we know
The crash happened following a traffic stop-turned-pursuit on Interstate 94 on Sunday night.
The Minnesota State Patrol says troopers attempted to stop a vehicle on I-94 near Marion Street for speeding around 11:15 p.m.
They say the driver initially stopped but then sped off, leading troopers north on I-35E for several miles. Traffic camera video shows the driver missing the Larpenteur Avenue exit and making a U-turn and driving the wrong way up an entrance ramp before heading east on Larpenteur.
Troopers ended their pursuit at that point, relying on a helicopter to follow the driver. However, the fleeing driver continued to speed away and eventually collided with a parked car about a mile down the road at Larpenteur Avenue and Arcade Street.
The impact of the crash killed a person who was inside the parked car.
The driver of the speeding vehicle, a 28-year-old man, ran from the scene on foot after the crash but was arrested by Ramsey County deputies. He is now being held in Ramsey County Jail.
Context
The crash site, near Highway 61 and just west of Lake Phalen, was littered with debris from the violent impact.
Authorities said reconstruction crews and drone imagery were used at the scene to gather evidence.
