St. Louis Park crash: ‘Freaking out’ driver didn’t slow for crosswalk, charges say
ST. LOUIS PARK, Minn. (FOX 9) - A crash in St. Louis Park between a vehicle and two pedestrians that left one dead and another in the hospital has resulted in vehicular homicide charges for the man behind the wheel – who police believe might have been intoxicated at the time of the incident.
St. Louis Park crash
What we know: Police responded to the report of a crash involving two pedestrians on the 3900 block of Meadowbrook Lane in St. Louis Park at around 6 p.m. on Monday.
When they arrived, officers found a 51-year-old woman and a 60-year-old man had been struck by a vehicle. The woman died at the scene, while the man was transported to the Hennepin County Medical Center with non-life-threatening injuries.
Crash investigation
What they're saying: Officers spoke with witnesses and learned that both victims had been crossing the street in the crosswalk when a vehicle traveling northbound on Meadowbrook Lane – determined later to be driven by Jeremy Sherman, 38, of St. Louis Park – struck them both.
A witness told police that Sherman’s vehicle was traveling "very fast" at the time of the crash, and that it "did not appear that the vehicle slowed down or attempted to stop or brake" before striking them.
When police spoke with Sherman, officers said they detected a "strong odor of alcohol coming from his breath" despite him insisting he had just gotten off work, and hadn't been drinking.
Police say Sherman stated he was "freaking out right now" when referring to the crash that occurred.
Authorities obtained a warrant for Sherman’s blood, which will be submitted for further analysis.
Charges
What's next: Sherman faces one count of criminal vehicular homicide and one count of criminal vehicular operation.
He is currently in custody, with bail set at $500,000.
