HOPKINS, Minn. (FOX 9) - The driver involved in a crash that left Hopkins teen Lauren Olson seriously injured in March 2024 has been sentenced for his involvement.
Mohamed Salad sentenced
What we know:
On Wednesday, Mohamed Aydarus Salad, 30, of Minnetonka, was sentenced in Hennepin County District Court after previously pleading guilty to criminal vehicular operation in connection with the crash on March 5.
Facing an 18-month stayed jail sentence, in line with state guidelines, Judge Amber Brennan issued a year in the workhouse.
Salad will serve roughly six months after credit for six months already served in jail since his arrest, and be eligible to complete the time on electronic home monitoring. He will then be on probation for three years.
Highway 7 crash
The backstory:
According to the criminal complaint, on March 5, 2024, Salad was behind the wheel of a Chevy Equinox and ran through a red light before slamming into another vehicle on Highway 7 in Minnetonka.
The crash left Hopkins student, Lauren Olson, 17, with serious injuries, including a traumatic brain injury and broken bones. Olson spent a week in a coma and was hospitalized for a month due to the crash.

Court records say Salad was driving an estimated 96 mph just seconds before the impact. The speed limit on that section of the highway was 55 mph. Authorities also said his driving privileges were already revoked, and he shouldn't have been on the road at the time of the crash.
Salad was charged with criminal vehicular operation nearly five months after a crash occurred. He entered a guilty plea in December to one count of criminal vehicular operation causing great bodily harm.
