Madison, Wisconsin school shooting: What’s known about the victims

At least three people are dead and others injured after a shooting on Monday at Abundant Life Christian School in Madison, Wisconsin.

What is known about the victims?

Police have confirmed three people were killed in the shooting, including the shooter. The victims were only identified as one teacher and one teenage student, Madison Police Chief Shon Barnes said.

Another six people were injured in the shooting, Barnes continued. Two of those injured are in the hospital in critical condition and their injuries are "considered life-threatening."

The other four students who were injured were taken to area hospitals with non-life-threatening injuries.

It was originally reported that three people were killed in the shooting, but during a news conference on Monday, police erroneously said five people were deceased. A correction was sent via their Facebook page following that news conference, once again confirming three people were killed.

What is known about the shooter?

The shooter was a student at the school and was only described as a teenager by Barnes.

No further details on the specific age and gender of the suspect were released.

So far, the motive behind the shooting is unknown.

What happened?

A call came into police dispatch for an active shooter at about 10:57 a.m. local time, police said during a news conference on Monday morning.

Barnes said police officers who responded did not fire their weapons.

Investigators believe the shooter used a 9mm pistol, a law enforcement official told The Associated Press. The official spoke on the condition of anonymity because they were not authorized to discuss the ongoing investigation.

Agents from the federal Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives have responded to the scene to assist local law enforcement.
