Overweight truck falls through historic covered bridge, plunges into river

An overweight truck loaded with crushed gravel fell through a covered wooden bridge in Maine, plunging into the river below and causing substantial damage that will leave the bridge closed for months.

According to local reports, the truck was crossing the Babb’s Covered Bridge in Gorham, Maine, when the bridge collapsed under it. 

Officials with the Maine Department of Transportation said the truck exceeded the 3-ton weight limit for the bridge, which was built in 1840.

Photos released by the Gorham Police Department show the vehicle submerged in water under a gaping hole in the bridge.

The driver was able to get out and had only minor injuries, according to police.
