A Texas Tech University student is in custody after police say he shot and killed a campus police officer Monday night.

University Spokesperson Chris Cook says a campus police officer was making a welfare check on a student, Hollis Daniels, and found drugs and drug paraphernalia.

When the officer took the 19-year-old to the police station, the student pulled out a gun and fatally shot the officer in the head, Cook confirmed.

Daniels ran away, forcing the campus to go on lockdown. Police located Daniels around 9:30 p.m. near the AT&T Jones stadium.

Texas Tech lifted the lockdown but is asking students to avoid the campus police department and the north side of campus.

Gov. Greg Abbott says he spoke to TTU Chancellor Robert Duncan to officer his condolences and has mobilized DPS to help the Lubbock Police Department.

"Our hearts go out to the family of the police officer killed at Texas Tech University," he said in a statement. "As the Texas Tech campus deals with this heartbreaking tragedy, Cecilia and I pray for the continued safety of the students and the entire community."

The officer's name has not been released.
