Toddler dies after accidentally shooting himself in Otter Tail County: Sheriff

A toddler in Otter Tail County has died after an apparent accidental shooting, according to authorities.

What we know: The Otter Tail County Sheriff’s Office said deputies received a call around 5:40 p.m. on Sunday about a 3 ½-year-old boy who reportedly shot himself in Oak Valley Township.

Once EMS arrived at the scene, the child was transported to Astera Hospital in Wadena, Minnesota, with undetermined injuries. In an update on Monday, the sheriff's office said the boy had died from his injuries. 

What we don’t know: The sheriff’s office said the caller reported the child had "accidentally shot themself," but it’s unclear how the child got the firearm or who it belongs to. 

Further details regarding the circumstances of the shooting were not immediately available.

The incident remains under investigation. The sheriff's office did not say whether any arrests had been made.
