Unseasonable warm up and rainfall closes Twin Cities area outdoor ice-skating rinks
COON RAPIDS, Minn. (FOX 9) - Unseasonably warm weather plus recent rainfall have temporarily shut down many outdoor ice-skating rinks across the Twin Cities metro over the weekend.
It was sad news for kids on winter break, and for businesses relying on a strong winter season.
Closed until further notice
What we know: The outdoor ice-skating rink at Riverview Park in Coon Rapids was visibly melted and slushy on Sunday.
It was just one of the many outdoor rinks and warming houses across the Twin Cities metro closed due to the unseasonably warm weather and recent rainfall.
Many cities and recreation departments announced their outdoor rinks would remain closed until further notice. Their teams will reassess and rebuild as weather permits.
Ice skate shops see business slow down, but remain optimistic
Local business impact: The team at Play It Again Sports in Minnetonka said it is a bit of a flashback to last winter.
"We are usually really low on equipment by now, so this year had a later start because of last year," said Jolene Reyes, store manager at Play It Again Sports in Minnetonka. "Out of our five locations, Roseville, Woodbury, Eagan, and Minnetonka, Blaine, this is one of the primary (stores) for winter sports."
The store specializes in both used and new equipment options for a variety of activities. The team said they are optimistic the colder weather on the way will allow people to enjoy everything the season has to offer.
"Winter sports in Minnesota is a big part of what we do here, skating, skiing, snowboarding," said Jon Pearson, co-manager at Play It Again Sports in Minnetonka.
What you can do: Check with your local rink or city for the latest status.
