Deputies in western Wisconsin are mourning one of their own after they say a suspected drunk driver hit and killed a Dunn County corrections officer.

What we know: The Dunn County Sheriff's Office reports Correctional Officer Jeff Reynolds died in a crash on Dec. 24. Reynolds was driving west on Hwy 12/State Hwy 29 at 2:44 a.m. when a vehicle traveling north on CTH E failed to stop at a stop sign and collided with his vehicle.

The sheriff's office says Reynolds was on his way to cover a shift at the county jail.

The other side: The driver of the other vehicle, identified as 40-year-old Mark A. Sokolowski of Eau Claire, has been charged with Homicide by Intoxicated Use of a Vehicle. He is currently held at Eau Claire County Jail on a $75,000 cash bond. Three passengers in Sokolowski’s vehicle, including his wife, suffered injuries in the crash.

What's next?: Sokolowski made his initial court appearance on Thursday.

The backstory: In a Facebook post, the Dunn County Sheriff's Office remembered Reynolds: "Jeff began his career with the Sheriff’s Office in 2007 and was a valued member who will be missed greatly."
