A memorial service was held for fallen Minneapolis Police Officer Jamal Mitchell in New Haven, Connecticut Monday. Officer Mitchell was killed in the line of duty while responding to a mass shooting in Minneapolis on May 30.

MPD Officer Jamal Mitchell's 101-year-old great grandmother spoke at his memorial service in Connecticut. A public safety memorial service was held last week at Maple Grove High School for Officer Mitchell, before his body was flown to Connecticut for a private funeral service and burial.

Jamal Mitchell 'wanted to be an officer who made an impact'

Officer Jamal Mitchell's friend, Chris Dunker, spoke at his memorial service June 11. He talked about his experience as Mitchell's neighbor. His first impression of Mitchell was that "this guy is really outgoing." Dunker said he will miss seeing Mitchell in the front yard with his children and being greeted every time Mitchell saw him coming home.

Officer Luke Weatherspoon, a friend of Jamal Mitchell, spoke at his memorial service on Tuesday, saying Mitchell would always make time for his friends and was always so thoughtful. He was a hero on and off the job, with an extensive shoe collection. The day before Mitchell died, he jumped in the pool to save a child who was struggling to swim - with his beloved sneakers on. He donned his uniform proudly and took great pride in the oath he gave, Weatherspoon said. "Mitch is the hero the City of Minneapolis needed ... We must continue the legacy that he designed," Weatherspoon said. "We must continue Mitch's legacy of community engagement."

Frey: Officer Mitchell 'will be remembered as a hero ... forever'

Minneapolis Police Officer Jamal Mitchell was remembered at a memorial service on June 11. Minneapolis Mayor Jacob Frey spoke, thanking Mitchell's parents for such an "extraordinary hero." Frey said about Mitchell, "You lived a hero. You died a hero. And you will be remembered as a hero in our city forever."
