Temperatures peak in the 70s Sunday and Monday before thunderstorms return Tuesday. Watch for a big cooldown later next week.

MN weather: Warm and sunny weekend ahead

Sustained winds from the south are expected for this afternoon, likely bringing warm temperatures with them. Some areas may come close to 80° and possibly even higher. Winds are forecasted to change directions Sunday, likely coming from the northwest with less intensity. Temperatures are projected to be in the lower 70s by Sunday afternoon.

Summer-like weekend ahead

Abundant sunshine and warm temperatures will be the theme for the next few days, as temps will warm into the 70s Saturday through Monday. Showers and thunderstorms return by Tuesday to feed newly thawed lawns and trees throughout the Twin Cities.

It's another sunny and seasonable day in the Twin Cities metro on Friday before summer-like temperatures arrive for the weekend. Friday is breezy with wind speeds at 10-20 mph from the northwest, but there's an abundance of sunshine and a high of 62 degrees. For the weekend, temperatures heat up into the mid and upper 70s.

Temperatures take a slight dip Thursday for a high of 59 degrees in the Twin Cities metro area. A few scattered showers are possible, but don't be alarmed if you hear tornado sirens, as two tests are running on Thursday as part of Severe Weather Awareness Week.

There was plenty of sunshine and summer-like weather for the first part of Wednesday, but slightly cooler temperatures are projected for the rest of the evening. It's wonderfully mild for Wednesday, but an afternoon stray rumble is possible. It feels more like spring, with highs of around 69 degrees in the Twin Cities metro area. Enjoy the mid-day sunshine before clouds move back in for a chance of isolated rumbles.

Temperatures are above average for Tuesday, with a high of 61 degrees in the metro area and partly sunny skies. A possible drip or sprinkle is possible in the morning, and a few stray drips could pop up in the afternoon and evening.

More showers are expected for Monday, but it won't be a total washout. Showers clear out by mid-morning, but another round is expected later in the evening. The afternoon will have several hours of dry conditions with highs in the low 50s for the Twin Cities metro area.
