Engaged couple beaten to death by victim's son in Shakopee, Minn.

SHAKOPEE, Minn. (KMSP) - An engaged couple was found beaten to death inside their home on the 1100 block of Dakota Street in Shakopee, Minn. early Tuesday morning.

Shakopee police officers made a welfare check at the home around midnight when they found 68-year-old Terry Weimer and 67-year-old Renee Ahrens dead from apparent blunt force trauma. Police said there was no forced entry into the home.

"Brutal is probably a good word to describe the scene that our officers found," Shakopee Police Chief Jeff Tatum said.

Police identified the suspect as the couple’s son, Adam Weimer, who lives in Waseca -- about 50 miles south of Shakopee. A SWAT standoff with the son ended around noon on Tuesday after several hours of negotiations; and the suspect was found dead of a self-inflicted gunshot wound.

"There was a long standoff that lasted several hours eventually ended with the suspect taking his own life," Tatum said.

Neighbors say Weimer sometimes talked about a "troubled son," but they never expected this to happen -- "He had some family problems, that's all I'm going to say," one neighbor told Fox 9.

One family member told Fox 9 that Adam had been dealing with mental issues for some time, and never got the help he needed. But police wouldn't speculate on a motive Tuesday, only saying the deaths were tragic and unnecessary.

"You can imagine the amount of anger and rage that it takes where their mindset needs to be to do something like this," Tatum said.

The Minnesota Bureau of Criminal Apprehension, Shakopee police, Savage police and the Scott County sheriff’s office are investigating the deaths.
