Icy conditions lead to Regions Hospital Emergency Department's busiest day ever Monday

Icy conditions across the metro led to Regions Hospital Emergency Department’s busiest day in history Monday.

According to the hospital, a total of 335 patients were treated, far surpassing its usual volume of about 240.

At Hennepin Healthcare in Minneapolis, over 70 patients were treated for slips and falls in a similarly busy day, although the hospital has not said if their patient load was record-breaking.

Across all of Regions Health Partners statewide, over 100 patients were treated for slips and falls Monday.

“The increase was closely related to yesterday’s icy conditions,” said a release from Regions. “At the end of the day, the Emergency Department saw 93 patients for ice-related injuries – with head injuries being the most common.”

The busy day comes after an abnormally busy last week as well due to the winter weather. During the polar vortex, the Emergency Department alone saw 36 cases of frostbite from Monday to Friday.
