Minneapolis man sues Boy Scouts over alleged sexual abuse by troop leader

MINNEAPOLIS (KMSP) - A former Minneapolis-area boy scout is suing the Boy Scouts of America and the St. Paul-based Northern Star Council for alleged sexual abuse committed by his troop leader from 1967 to 1974.

Steve Parker was a member of Boy Scout Troop 17 in Robbinsdale, Minn. According to court documents filed in Ramsey County District Court, he was first sexually abused by the troop’s assistant scout leader, Andrew Momont, when he was 11.

The complaint says Parker, now age 59 and living in Minneapolis, was abused for years at various scouting meetings and events, as well as at Boy Scout camps in Minnesota and Wisconsin.

According to court documents, the alleged abuse took place while Momont was a scout leader employed by the Boy Scouts of America and the Northern Star Council.

The lawsuit alleges the Boy Scouts organization knew for decades that scout leaders were sexually abusing young boys but did little to address it.

Momont is believed to have several other victims in addition to Parker, according to a news release from Parker’s attorney.
