West River Parkway open again after 2 years
MINNEAPOLIS (KMSP) - A segment of the West River Parkway in Minneapolis that was closed for more than two years after it was damaged by a mudslide reopened permanently Thursday afternoon.
West River Parkway from 4th Street S. to East 24th Street closed in June 2014 after a torrential downfall caused a 100-foot wide section of the west bank of the Mississippi River to fail, creating a mudslide that wreaked havoc on the road.
Federal and locals crews spent nearly two years working to repair and stabilize the slope and protect the parkway and nearby buildings from future incidents. The parkway remained closed throughout the majority of summer 2016 as Hennepin County crews worked to repair the Franklin Avenue Bridge.
West River Parkway and the West River Parkway Trail are now open to motorists, bicyclists and pedestrians.
